Drug shortages have become increasingly common over the past decade. Drug shortages have had a clinical impact on many of the commonly used medications in emergency departments, specifically sterile injectable medications. Better understanding the implications of drug shortages and mitigation strategies is critical to maintaining patient safety and ensuring clinical quality goals are achieved.

• Understand causes for and the extent of drugs shortages impacting emergency departments in the United States in the context of FDA policy
• Learn how shortages can impact patient care and what EDs can to do mitigate the impact of drug shortages on patient safety and quality
